A simpler skincare routine: what to buy first and what can wait

A skincare shelf can fill up faster than a routine takes shape. A cleanser catches your eye, a serum promises something different, and suddenly you are deciding between several bottles without knowing what role each one plays.

Start with a short list of needs instead of a long list of products. What do you already use? What do you finish regularly? Which step are you actually trying to improve?

Begin with the basics

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a simple foundation: cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection. Its guidance also makes a useful point for your budget: effective skincare does not have to be expensive. Choose products appropriate for your skin, and look for broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. A cosmetic serum or moisturizer without a labeled SPF does not replace sunscreen. Read the AAD's guidance on skincare on a budget.

Give each purchase a job

Before buying, finish this sentence: “I want this product because…” If the answer is only that you saw it repeatedly online, pause and read the product page. Look at its ingredients, directions, size, and price. Compare it with what you already own.

You do not need to buy every product in a collection. A small routine that you understand is a sensible starting point. Additional products should have a clear place rather than making your shelf harder to navigate.

Make your routine easy to follow

Keep the products you use together, with their directions accessible. Do not discard packaging until you have recorded any instructions you need. When comparing products, use the same units for bottle size so the prices are easier to understand.

Explore the La Colibri essentials

Our collection includes Refresh Facial Cleanser and Replenish Facial Moisturizer. Each product page provides the ingredient list and directions so you can decide whether it belongs in your routine. Neither is offered as a substitute for sunscreen.

If you have a skin condition or are unsure what suits your skin, ask a dermatologist for individual guidance.
